Review of Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (2014) by Jeevan G — 11 Mar 2014
The fifth entry in the Paranormal Activity franchise while isn't as strong as the first three films, it isn't as bad as the fourth. This "spin-off" gambled with it's whole "new direction" as it takes place in Oxnard, CA and features a primarily latino cast and while I thought that worked quite well, it also took some other new gambles.
By adding more humor, which, eventually leads to a much darker tone, and adding another new element at the end which some people will love and others will hate, the film is able to maintain it's freshness even though it's a sequel.
The acting was mediocre and the writing was sloppy especially when it tries to tie-in this film with all the others previous to it. The Marked Ones feels like a first-draft of a script rather than a completed and polished one.
Overall, while the film was better than the January release date stamp implies, it's only merely above your run-of-the-mill popcorn flick.
