Review of Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (2014) by Nate J — 26 Mar 2014
Fifth entry in the Paranormal Activity series is a strained and unnecessary sequel in a series that has overstayed its welcome. This entry is just an excuse to make more money, and the filmmakers clearly didn't care in making a good film with an engaging story.
The film uses old ideas and it clearly shows that the way everything is structured is lazy, uninspired and rushed in order to make a quick buck. I felt that the Paranormal Activity films worked best as a trilogy, and it should have concluded at the third film.
Unfortunately, the studio wants to drag out the once good series to the point where they simply scrap the bottom of the barrel for ideas. With this fifth film, they've hit the bottom, and it shows in the finished film.
This is an awful mess from start to finish, one that just relies on cheap jump scares that are more laughable than actually scary. I recommend to horror fans to skip out on this one, as this is one of the worst horror films of 2014.
The Marked Ones is just another nail in the coffin for this series. After this film, I sure hope they'll stop making Paranormal Activity films, as the spark of originality has long extinguished. This entry is just boring with predictable clichés and the end result is a film that never is scary, and it ends up being a silly affair that isn't worth seeing.
I hated the film, and with that being, if you go into this one expecting something good, you'll sadly be disappointed as this film has no memorable moments. The Marked Ones can easily be described as a horror film void of scares and good story, and it tends to rely more on recycled ideas from previous films to create its terror, which in turn doesn't work.
