Review of Paranoid Park (2007) by Megan W — 17 Jan 2009
Just a beautiful, wonderful, amazing movie.
Of course, I think Gus Van Sant can't do much wrong - I continually think everything he does is just haunting and brilliant.
He makes you linger in emotional moments you're used to brushing aside in the name of plot and resolution - and it reminds you that in real life you have to linger in your own bad moments. You don't get to brush those aside, either. I really felt so much sincere empathy for the main character in this and felt connected to him in a way that fast-paced, rock-em-sock-em, hollywood-shit never lets you do - and it was hard to watch but I'm glad I did. It was a long 80 minutes where nothing happens, and I suppose some people might find that boring... it's going to hit and miss with people but if it hits it'll be a bullseye.
It's a movie that I'll keep in my mind a long time.
