Review of Paranoid Park (2007) by Adam K — 20 Jan 2009
I'm always impressed at how Gus Van Sant is able to capture youth on film. Nothing ever feels forced or like it was created by someone who only knows today's young people via pop culture. Plus, he managed to portray skater culture and make it feel believable, rather than something shoehorned in to get the dumb kid demographic into the theater.
Christopher Doyle's cinematography is wonderful, and helps to bring about Van Sant's desolate youth landscape in the same vein as Van Sant's previous left-of-the-dial work (although this film is far more accessable than, say, LAST DAYS).
If you like Van Sant's recent run of films, you're sure to find something worthwhile here.
