This is Van Sant at his most lightly nuanced and his typically soft focus observations have never been more memorable. Led by Gabe Nevins superb dà (C)but performance and consistently awe-inspiring camera work, Van Sant's message of adoration for his home town, Portland, is darkly affecting and quietly moving.
Gus has done it again.
