Review of Paranoid Park (2007) by Ben B — 08 Mar 2009
Someone pointed out to me that Last Days works better because it doesn't even have a semblance of a plot - the avant-garde meanderings can be appreciated in and of themselves without some central dramatic event towering over the proceedings.
There are some good ideas here and some lovely marriages of image and sound, but I found myself wishing it were either a more conventional thriller or a total experimental wankfest (in more ways than one; Van Sant's casting choices say a lot about his taste in men).
As it stands, it definitely feels like a ride through the consciousness of a confused, numb, traumatized teenager. But it really could have been 30 minutes long.
