Gus Van Sant has been making films about the lost and disaffected kids of the Blank Generation for his entire career. This heartbreaking gem is what so many of those films could have been but weren't -- a vividly poetic work, free of moral judgments or artifice.
Thank God... after Elephant I really started to worry.
