Review of Paranoid Park (2007) by Carmela H — 01 Aug 2009
Van Sant does it again. After 'Milk', I've been going backwards through Gus's catalogue and 'Paranoid Park' is a brilliantly surreal tale of teenage angst, death and skateboarding.
Abound with art school film values including interesting camera angles, long shots and an eclectic soundtrack, Van Sant weaves a suspenseful story of one kids journey to the truth as he struggles to reconcile his personal choices, a new found sexual maturity and a hard kept secret. Building on the success of 'Elephant', Gus demonstrates yet again his ability to capture the fragility and complexity of adolescence.
