Review of Paradise Now (2005) by Jeremy P — 03 Jul 2008
Charming film. But let's get down to brass tacks, shall we? This film is essentially the portrait of a Palestinian suicide bomber. Conventional? No. Enlightening? Yes. For the first time in my like I was compelled/persuaded to see the holyland conflict from the perspective of the Palestinians.
Surprisingly, I found myself sympathizing with their plight. In that sense, I believe the film's objective was achieved. This film was not made for mere entertainment, it was conceieved to create awareness.
The film is in Arabic, with English subtitles, which adds to its authenticity. Interestingly, there is not a note of music present in this film. Not in the opening credits, not in the picture, & not in the closing credits.
The effect is rather eerie. In closing, this film brings many issues to the table, issues the no one wants to acknowledge. This is not a story of guilt, this film is a story of friendship, love, & conviction.
