Review of Paprika (2006) by Candice R — 11 Jan 2009
Essentially, I believe this film was meant to be more of an experience than an understandable story. Paprika takes the concept of lucid dreams, and flies with it. The plot centers around a new machine-the DC Mini-which allows therapists to enter patients' dreams.
When the device is stolen, the culprit cleverly combines the dreams of the patients with the dreams of the doctors. Result? Surreal, chaotic madness. What I really enjoyed about Paprika were the intense graphics incorporated with the animation.
The playful, fun color scheme of the problematic dreams illustrated the underlying conflict of child vs. adult. (This conflict becomes clear in the very last scene). Sober or high, Paprika is a charmingly disturbing adventure that is definitely worth taking.
