Review of Paprika (2006) by Trevor C — 19 Apr 2011
Beautifully animated and very much like a dream itself, with dark, bizarre, yet wonderful imagery. It doesn't all seem to tie together upon the first viewing, but its definitely a film worth seeing countless times for both its story and visuals.
One of my favorite aspects of this film is how it actually feels like it could be a live action film even with all these surreal things happening. As viewers, we are constantly aware of the emotions of the characters solely by facial expressions, and each frame represents something new in real time (unlike other Anime features where things like a twitching eye is just looped). Everything about the characters feel human and everything about the film (even the dreams) feel real.
I am now definitely a fan of Satoshi Kon, for this piece is definitely on par with the works of Miyazaki, and will see his other animated features as well as works of his to come. (Fans of Miyazaki should love this film!).
