Review of Paprika (2006) by Karlo M — 30 May 2009
Tokyo Godfathers aside, there's a definite level of congruency to Satoshi Kon's work. He seems to fascinate himself with the idea of reality and what happens when its extremities are forced, or in the case of Paprika, expunged.
This film is a visual tour de force in every implication of the term, illustrating a brilliantly contrived tale of intricate characters as they're conduced through varying levels of a corroding reality.
When one considers the short length of Kon's ten-year career, it's overwhelming how much he's accomplished in what too many traduce as a children's medium.
