Review of Paprika (2006) by Redmond B — 02 Dec 2010
I personally can't find anything bad to say about this movie. Occasionally it will jar the audience. Maybe the reveal of the bad guy twist is too obvious. My opinion is that anything obvious or cliched in the film is there to intentionally draw your your attention. This is Satoshi Kon's (Paranoia Agent, Perfect Blue) last complete film, and it's a worthy one to cap off his legacy. The story distills his philosophies, and the all-around great performances and cinematography allow it to come across as sincere and thoughtful.
Inception showed the great special effects you can get away with in a dreamscape; Parprika shows the wonder of dreams, the horror of nightmares, and how unknowable the boundaries between them, and between reality can be.
