Review of Paprika (2006) by Blair V — 24 Jan 2011
The Inception before Inception, Paprika's basic premise revolves around the idea of therapists being able to enter their patients dreams via a machine which resembles a Bluetooth headset. The movie is well drawn, but the way the mind-hopping is portrayed in the film ends up being too schizophrenic for it's own good.
Even though the back-stories of the characters which are told through their dreams are interesting and would provide a good basis for character-building, there is no time for the viewer to grow affection to any of the multitude of characters in between the mind-sequences.
This is truly a shame, because as a concept Paprika had a lot of potential, but it is ultimately let down by some mediocre direction.
