Review of Paprika (2006) by Eduardo G — 27 Feb 2011
Satoshi Kon's anime film "Perfect Blue" was unique but didn't float my boat. "Tokyo Godfathers" was charming and sometimes hilarious, but not one of my favorites. And "Millenium Actress" isn't appealing to me.
So I had my doubts when going into this film, Satoshi Kon's last work: "Paprika". When the movie was over I discovered something unusual and unexpected: my jaw was open, I was scratching my head, and my mind was literally blown to pieces.
"Paprika" is a revolutionary movie, not just in the anime department, but in any film genre all-together. The music, script, animation style, story, characters, and the fact that none of it is making much sense yet it makes all the sense in the world.
..makes "Paprika" one of the greatest movies ever created. It is Kon's final work (besides an unfinished robot anime film, which hopefully will be completed) and a true triumph. RIP Satoshi Kon.
