Review of Paprika (2006) by Jeff H — 30 Sep 2011
Paprika is an animation masterpiece. The artwork is beautiful and intensely mind-bending as well. Not only that, but it is rich with detail and blended well with CG when required. It is the perfect accompaniment to a plot that keeps the viewer guessing about the nature of reality and dreams.
At times the film displays a level of absurdity that is deeply hilarious. At other times, the characters will keep the viewer enthralled as they desperately cling to reality. As a minor negative, the film, which is adapted from a novel, leaves out so many details that the viewer must struggle occasionally with the fast pace of character development.
But this is also part of the enjoyment, as the rest of the movie presents a bit of a perceptual challenge. It could use better dubbing, as some of the English voices are too childlike. But overall, an excellent work that I put in my top 10 anime.
