Review of Paprika (2006) by Aaron T — 22 Dec 2013
It's best to give this movie a few viewings, first time just as a sensory experience, and then try to figure out the plot the next few times. Even after several viewings myself though, I still don't quite have the plot figured out. To some degree it's in that Matrix sort of way, of not knowing all the philosophical nuances; but in other ways I simply don't understand what the hell I just saw. The more basic details should have been made more coherent, and that's my biggest criticism towards Paprika.
As a sensory experience though, it's overwhelming. You will never see anything quite like this. Diving into the dream concept with a million times more intensity than something like Inception, the film has a surreal and extremely dreamlike quality about it. It's hypnotic even when it's horrifying.
You've never seen anything quite like Paprika. Even if it comes across as indecipherable at times, it's a worthy experience nonetheless.
