Review of Paprika (1991) by Ivan S — 05 Jan 2011
I'll start off by that watching this movie was definitely a unique and weird experience. Half of the time I was wondering what the hell was going on, so I've had to see it another time just to understand some of the ideas this movie is presenting. This movie probably went under the radar for most people but to explain it's plot and not get to much into detail I'll just say that is more or less the anime version of Inception. Pretty much just like Inception it deals with people entering each others dreams and sharing dreams, but unlike Inception people who enter the dreams are therapists, who by entering their dreams and try to help their subjects/patients. But there is so much more to this plot than I've just described it, you just have to check it out yourself.
This movie was directed by late Satoshi Kon, who was known for his visually impressive animation and unique style. And what style this movie has. Unlike Inception dreams in this movie fell like real dreams, with all the weird shit going on. And some things will, just like real dream, leave you confused and you'll be probably scratching your head wondering what the hell just happened. This movie can be easily recommended for both kids and adults. Kids will probably enjoy it's amazing visuals, and adults will probably enjoy it's incredibly dense story.
Satoshi Kon definitely created another incredible anime. Those who haven't seen any of his other movies should definitely check them out, cause they are just as good as this one. It's sad that he died only at the age of 46 due to his illness. It's sad that we won't get to see him direct another incredible anime, but still we have his older movies to remind us how incredible Satoshi Kon was.
