Review of Papillon (2017) by Maddie F — 10 Oct 2018
Having never heard of the original film, I didn't quite know what to expect. I ended up seeing it twice.
For them to go into such gritty detail about the horrors of this time was fantastic. It was messed up and at times made me flinch. It really is a tale of how remarkably strong the human spirit is.
My only complaint would be regarding how it seemed the characters' masculinity sometimes got the better of them. In the trailer there is a line where Henri Charriere (Charlie Hunam) calls Louis Dega (Rami Malek) his friend, before defending him from a fellow inmate. That line isn't in the movie. It's subtle things like that, but at least they were able to share a hug together. For Pete's sake, men are allowed to be affectionate towards their friends. It's not that hard.
