Review of Papillon (1973) by Greg P — 21 Dec 2007
I wanted this movie to be great, but it ended up just being above average for me. We are taken to the infamous Devil's Island (similar to Alcatraz) where a prisoner, with help from his newly found buddy (Hoffman), wastes no time trying to escape.
It's not like there wasn't much going on, but the way things played out to start was pretty one dimensional and only seemed to scratch the surface. The solitary scenes is where this movie shines the most, digging it's deepest into pending insanity.
Also highlighting this film was some inventive camera work. It's a shame that the dragged out ending and mediocre beginning brought it down, because the middle was quite good.
