Review of Papillon (1973) by Stuart J. P — 27 Nov 2008
You have to stick with this prison break movie... It doesn't exactly have the feel good nature of The Shawshank Redemption, Or even (to some measures) The Great Escape. This is gritty realism more along the lines of a Midnight Express.
And all the better for it, The leads do brilliant job at keeping us hooked. With McQueen brooding and tough as he does. And Hoffman nervous and skittish, as he does. Both complimenting each other extremely well.
It may not be feel good. But the end scene will put a smile on your face, if you can make it that far.
