Review of Papillon (1973) by Lynda M — 15 Feb 2009
Viva la histoire! Interesting and educational and revelatory film about one man's escape attempts from the infamous penal colony of French Guiana. Some attention is paid to the horrifying conditions of work camps and solitary confinement. A nod is also made to the practice of subduing an inmate by binding them in classic hogtie position (originally used for tying actual hogs for slaughter) in which the wrists are bound together then tied to the ankles.
JUDGE.
I accuse YOU... of a WASTED LIFE!
PAPILLION.
Guilty... guilty... guilty...
CAMP COMMANDANT.
Make the best of what we offer you, and you will suffer less than you deserve.
DEGA.
A temptation resisted is a true measure of character.
