Review of Papillon (1973) by Stéphane I — 13 Dec 2009
Papillon is amazing. The best prison film ever. The fact that it is based on a true story makes it even more fascinating. Great screenplay, spectacular scenery (the events occur in French Guyana, so the tropical scenery is awe-inspiring, but even the scenes shot inside the tiny solitary cells have a ton of details) and the cast is incredibly solid.
Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman were at the peak of their performing skills when they shot this. Tough, gritty and unrelenting. We can only dream of movies that have this level of storytelling depth nowadays.
