I loved the book when I read it was a kid - titled, Marianna's Dreams. The original story was more fairytale ie equal parts magic and horror. This was more horror, psychological thriller vs semi-religious catharsis.
I would probably have liked the film more if I wasn't aware of the changes made, and had speculations as to why the changes were made. Still the creepy house (the set) has it's bonuses. (I can sort of imagine this as a Gilliam film).
