Review of Paper Towns (2015) by Dann M — 01 May 2016
Paper Towns is a coming-of-age film that kind of has some mix messages. The story follows a high school senior who goes in search of his next door neighbor and unrequited love Margo when she disappears one day, believing that she has left clues to where she has gone, but to succeed he'll need help from his friends.
The performances are pretty good and the writing does an impressive job at following the teen comedy format without being too cliché. Also, the dialog is rather witty and there's a positive message about friendship and living life uninhibited.
However, the film doesn't distinguish a right or a wrong way to get to a free life, and seems to idealize the Margo character who coldly casts off friends and family for her own selfish ends. It's a bit muddled in what it's trying to say, but overall Paper Towns is a fun and entertaining teen romance.
