Review of Paper Moon (2013) by Ryan H — 12 Sep 2010
I loved every single moment of this film. Every single scene where Moze and Addie bickered were hilarious. She is up to so much in this movie. There were so many times that this could have turned down the road and became a kid's movie, but it seems to always stay mature.
And Bogdanovich does an excellent job of creating a connection between Moze and Addie, and both characters with the audience. I cared about them the entire time. The movie opens up beautifully with a shot on Addie at her mother's funeral.
She is not crying, and it doesn't seem like she's trying to be anything, she's just herself. Addie is an adult, she smokes, she curses, she can even get more money out of people than Moze.
She pretty much controls Moze. But there's one difference: she has more heart than Moze. This is what makes her better. She will not steal from a widowed mother of five kids, but she will take from a widowed rich woman.
She never even stops setting her sights on money. She gets aggravated when Moze wants to go on vacation with the woman. But again, Addie gets her way. Bogdanovich makes some scenes have long shots for something with a kid.
It always amazes me when directors can pull this off, just like what Bergman did with The Silence. It was even great to see the small part that Randy Quaid had in the movie. "I'll rastle you for it!" I'm so excited to start a class by such a brilliant director.
