Review of Paper Heart (2009) by Justin M — 29 Nov 2011
"Paper Heart" has various features about the film, the making of the film and some performances by star Charlene Yi but they aren't very interesting nor funny. They don't make you more interested in seeing the film but dull the desire to see it. So far 0 out of 10. I've not actually watched the film yet.
I finally watched the film and it wasn't too bad. Yi is appealing in a sort of "nonpopular", perhaps "geekish" way and the "realtime" aspect of the film (documentary?) reminds me of films like "Before Sunrise". The interviews of people talking about their relationships and love added to the film. The use of "animation" within the film reminds me of "Waking Life" a bit though they are very different films. The film stands on its own all the way through the jostling with the director and film crew to the very unhappy ending that leads to a break with the crew and the ultimately silly, yet oddly satisfying animated ending.
Contrary to another reviewer, I didn't find the number of older couples odd or awkward. Who more than the older generation would truly espouse something about love, (the younger generations not so much)? I would recommend this to others whether they ultimately like it or not, because it represents something "new" and "fresh" rather than the stale "Hollywood offerings". 7 out of 10.
