Review of Pan's Labyrinth (2006) by Paul B — 18 Jan 2013
One of the true great masterpieces made in my lifetime. Re-watching for the 5th or so time this evening it's still as haunting, tough, shockingly violent and yet beautiful as the 01st. Seen through the eyes of a young girl this is the story of war, those it affects and questions the reasons for it as she retreats into a mysterious labyrinth.
The allegories are never laboured or forced and the performances immense. This is a film that knows exactly what it wants to do and say and does so immaculately. Stunning visuals compliment a film that has depth and heart and effortlessly draws you into the fantasy to show you both.
