Review of Pan's Labyrinth (2006) by Ben D — 20 Jan 2013
Fantasy meets a very dark uncertain time in this gruesome yet beautiful story that unfolds in the most mystical and suspenseful manor.
Ofelia a young girl faces monsters and challenges both in reality and in the fantasy world. The labyrinth, gatekeeper if you like, Faun offers revelations on ofelias destiny but only if she follows precise orders without any deviation whatsoever whilst back in the real world the Spanish civil war has come to an end but the country is far from being at peace. Closer to home dealings with the powerful presence of her step farther, the general, who is consumed with stamping out the final resistance cause much concern as he has a massive dislike for any rebellious behaviour.
Del toro has created a wonderfully creative cocktail combining wonderful contrasts such as darkness and light with extremely subtle but effective uses of CGI, it builds so well towards a stunningly sad end when reality and fantasy come crashing together.
All in all a brilliantly refreshing piece that deserves all the praise it gets. Keep your eyes and ears pealed for the power of 3.
