Review of Pan's Labyrinth (2006) by Jon C — 19 Jan 2015
Perhaps just a tad overrated.
Still, Guillermo del Toro has an eye for the fantastical and real.
He is still a visual genius when it comes to fantasy.
It's a unique look into the mind of a young girl while trying to survive in a devastating struggle.
It's civil war in Spain and the guerilla rebels are causing trouble.
Ophelia and her mother are stuck in a dangerous relationship with the captain while awaiting a newborn baby.
Ophelia escapes into another reality filled with fauns, fairies and other strange creatures.
She has a dangerous task ahead of her protecting her loved ones from suffering the horrors of war.
I would have liked to have seen more of the fantasy element instead of switching back and forth.
Del Toro still does a fine job bending the harsh emotions between fantasy and reality in the mind of a youth.
