Review of Pan's Labyrinth (2006) by Robin E — 30 Apr 2016
Del Toro's swirling film is a work of unparalleled imagination as a young girl retreats from the hell of life during the Spanish Civil War into a freakish fantasy world which turns out to be just as cruel.
The way the two realities overlap becomes increasingly compelling as the film progresses. Its make-up and CGI effects are enough to put Hollywood to shame, but its daring and command of the medium easily place it way ahead of any of the bland offerings from Tinseltown.
Be prepared to flinch in some places though - this film doesn't pull any punches.
