Pan's Labyrinth was the first film I had seen with its entirety in a foreign language. I have watched films before with small portions involving subtitles but never a full 2 hour movie so I was curious what I would make of it. Known for the Hellboy movies, Guillermo del Toro creates a story which hooks you in and makes you forget you're reading the dialogue. The fantasy aspect that the previews and posters gives off in only half of the plot with the main focus being on a sadistic 1944 army officer. The characters are well written and they do quickly grow on you.

Whilst there are some visual effects used, del Toro is well known for his use of practical creature effects. The character of Fauno and Pale Man look fantastic and credit must go to the designers and performer Doug Jones.

The story jumps into it and doesn't slow down at all. Important actions are so frequent that you find yourself hooked and waiting to see what happens next. Pan's Labyrinth is a solid story that ends with a good twist and a satisfactory conclusion.
