After gaining some following for his Hollywood movies, Guillermo del Toro goes back to make films in his home country in Pan's Labyrinth.

The story starts five years after the conclusion of the Spanish Civil War. A young girl name Ofelia is taken to military post to meet her step father, a captain supporter of Franco. There, she discovers an ancient labyrinth and meets the faun and discovers that she is more than she belives she is.

Like the RT review says, this is the Alice in Wonderland for adults. The fairytale plot with the dark/horror style is really welll executed, it is described by many critics as "a fairytale for adults" and of course it is, I mean, you can tell just by the set up in Francoist period of Spain's history. The characters are well written and well acted (Ivana Vaquero in particular). The cinematography and the score are just perfect for the setting of this film and helps the narrative of the fim and of course the look of the creatures are what it is expected from Del Toro: creepy, creative and beautiful. The only problem that I have with this film is that the parallel history of the military against the rebels is not as well written as the Faun's tests, I enjoy it but it wasnt quite as intense as the fairy tale story, when I expected the real war stting would be more intense than the fantasy setting. I mean, I like it but it wasnt as good as the other story. Overall it is a great movie, one of the best none english spoken films I have ever seen.
