Review of Pan's Labyrinth (2006) by Matt M — 02 Aug 2013
In a post civil-war Spain, the stepdaughter of a Fascist captain, who believes in killing every single one of the rebels of Franco's regime, find out she may be the princess of some distant magical world, and must go through tasks to claim her noble title.
It's interesting to see what would usually be considered as a storyline for a younger audience get such a mature and violent on-screen rendition. Del Toro's stellar graphic production also finds added appeal with its remarkable graphics and creative art direction as well as some exciting special effects which darkly contrast the tenderness brought to the table by the child central character.
Despite a somewhat slow start, Pan's Labyrinth is an adventurous and scary vision which seeks to and succeeds in re-inventing the genre.
