Review of Pandora and the Flying Dutchman (1951) by Aidan H — 31 Oct 2007
There is no woman like Pandora and no-one to play her other than Ava Gardner. I am so besotted with this woman that anything she is in has me quivering like a fag at a Streisand gig. In this, she is a femme fatale wooed by a mysterious sea-faring immortal who literally asks her to die to save him from eternal damnation - and she does, with an almost mythical grandeur and lashings of cleavage and wind-swept hair (I could look at her gazing out to sea forever forever).
Mason is as stern and romantic as always and plays the role of the Dutchman with terrific gravitas and deep, doom-laden tones. Beware though - this is as camp as fuck and not for those who like their romances shot cinema verite style.
Hollywood at its most intensely romantic. Gorgeous!
