Review of Pan (2015) by Rob N — 15 Oct 2015
I had a number of issues and questions with this film: 1) when the Peter Pan story takes place around the turn of the century, you wouldn't expect an origin story to take place in the 1940s. 2) Even if it does take place in the 40s, that doesn't explain laborers singing Smells Like Teen Spirit and Blitzkrieg Bop.
3) why when members of the Indian tribe are killed, they explode into bursts of colorful dust. 4) as an origin story, you would expect to see the moment often talked about how Peter took Hooks hand and feeds it to a crocodile, but not only do you not see that, they remain friends by the end of the movie as if they're saving all the origin moments you wanted to see for a sequel.
Ultimately it's visually stunning to look at, but the story is very weak, Hook dramatically bellows all his lines, and you walk out of the theater feeling you only got to see the first half of the movie you thought you were seeing.
