Review of Pan (2015) by Train M — 29 Dec 2015
Pan is a disappointing adventure family film, it does try to have that big visual spectacular moments. The visuals cannot save the film from a horrible poor script, cheap looking costume design, tedious cheesy direction, and dull acting. For a big budget film, even the visual effects were terrible. There were a lot of sequences, when it is obvious what was green screen, cause the actors did feel a little out of place on what exactly they were looking at. Director Joe Wright did well in bringing films like 2012 Anna Karenina and Hanna, with his visual style and a distinct storytelling. His latest film Pan is a disaster, with a story that rushes in, to give plenty of excuses to have many visual sequences. The dialogue is filled with bad one-liners, and there is a sequence in the film that lacked creativity in what could have been a musical set piece. When Pan was thrown into a mining area, and every one was ranting and singing âSmells Like a Teen Spiritâ? which is a insult of ruining Nirvanaâ(TM)s song. I am sure, the remakes to the song was even better than hearing the casts and Hugh Jackmans chant the song. The direction was also cheesy as well, from the moments when we see Pan in the orphan home with greedy nuns to meeting strange characters in Neverland. The film has great actors like Hugh Jackman, Rooney Mara, and Garrett Hedlund. They all seemed really bored with their performances, just easily following up with what was tossed in that script. The costume and make up design is no better, when the costumes looks poorly put together. Like if it came from a cheap costume store, when the details are so noticeable when it is on screen. It is a prequel story showing how all these characters came to be like Captain Hook (Garrett Hedlund) being a cocky good guy, Tiger Lily (Rooney Mara), Blackbeard (Hugh Jackman), and Peter (Levi Miller). The story was also weak, when it was focused on Peter wanting to find his mother in Neverland, and bringing hope and an uprising against Blackbeard, who has evil plans to get rid of all the fairies.
Pan is a horrible action adventure film, the one prequel story that will never continue to see these characters grow in other adventures, just cause this was not worth watching.
