Review of Palindromes (2005) by J D — 06 Feb 2008
Like Neil LaBute, you don't go into a movie by Todd Solondz expecting to come out of it with pleasant feelings. You kinda need to prepare yourself for them, because they're usually pretty hard to stomach.
But they're also really well done and hella entertaining, and this one's no exception. It's actually a sequel of sorts to "Welcome to the Dollhouse" since the Weiner family factors into it.
Not quite sure what Solondz is trying to say in this one. The overarching theme here is about abortion, but he plays both sides without coming out and making a statement, skewering both points of view just enough so that EVERYONE gets skewered.
I guess it shows just how tough a topic it is that even Todd Solondz is afraid to offer a clear viewpoint. In conclusion, it's a Todd Solondz flick. If you don't know what that means, do a little research beforehand or at least get yourself mentally prepared to feel extremely uncomfortable for an hour and a half.
If you like his stuff, this is a good one.
