Review of Paint Your Wagon (1969) by Sanford R — 23 Mar 2009
Painful. I'm not even sure why I finished watching it. It's dull and boring ("watching paint dry" comes to mind). The story is bland and drawn out. There is nothing in this story that "sings.
" Hell, the actors can't even do that! You know you're in trouble when Clint Eastwood is the best singer of the bunch. And the songs don't always fit into the plot or make sense. I know it's a classic, but "They Call the Wind Maria"? Um.
...why do they call it that?! That's always been an odd song to me. Comatose non-singer Jean Seberg is the bland center of this ménage à trois. It's like a smutty version of "The Apple Dumpling Gang" - actually that would've made a better musical and Don Knotts couldn't sing any worse than Lee Marvin! What's interesting is to compare this with "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.
" It, too, wouldn't seem to have the most musical characters or a story that calls out for song (not to mention a plot that also could have been a little unseemly), but instead it's one of the greatest film musicals.
Casting actors who can sing and dance is a start.
