Review of Pain & Gain (2013) by James L — 25 Mar 2014
The PAIN of Michael Bay's other films was worth it since, Pain and Gain is all GAIN. Bay's visual style is evocative of American commercialism; of the American dream that juxtaposes with the dark undercurrents of the true life story.
Usually 'bad on a true story' is a gimmick used by film producers, but here it's there to give us a lump in our throats after laughing. Three body-builders become rich after kidnapping a rich mafioso and making him sign all of his possessions away to them.
Dwayne Johnson gives a comedic performance of a psychopath which grounds his reputation as a talented actor. Michael Bay is a very talented director for subdued blockbusters. The satirical archetypes are only invigorated by his lush camera work.
The Grand Theft Auto video game franchise has continuously attempted the perfectly executed satire of Bay's work. I fear most critics will look at the name of the director and already give it a rating.
