Review of Pain & Gain (2013) by Les E — 16 May 2014
There's no denying the film's crass handling of material, the fact that it's true and the female characters. People have every reason to be mad at Michael Bay for all that, yeah, sure. However, This film is Bay's most self aware feature.
He is embracing his natural ability to make flashy, loud, violent and almost operatic films with, what I feel, is a story that completely compliments Bay as a film maker. It suits him and he knows it.
The story is ridiculous, harsh and true. Bay embraces the ridiculousness as pantomime, the harshness as fuel for his Hollywood blockbuster ideals and the truth, as an ironic device to highlight how much of a farce the whole situation must have been, when it happened.
It's ridiculous and he knows it.
