Review of Pain & Gain (2013) by Nathan E — 20 May 2014
Despite its crass and loud exterior, the core of this film is a pretty solid morality play. It touches on the themes of excess, how much is too much, entitlement and envy.
Daniel's narration throughout the film actually complements the story rather well, as he feebly attempts to explain away all the reprehensible things he's done. That's a very prevalent pattern with sin; we've all tried to justify our bad actions.
The best gag in the whole film came about three quarters in. Just when things happening in the film are so out there that you couldn't possibly believe that it was based on a true story, the movie stops, a caption pops up and says, "Seriously, this actually happened." Very funny.
