Review of Pain & Gain (2013) by Connor S — 25 May 2014
Pain & Gain is a satricial, somewhat thought provoking movie, and although I hate to say it, MIchael Bay actually made a movie that isn't terrible. And while it isn't great either, Pain & Gain looks like it actually had effort put into it.
The kinda true story (the movie claims the events are true, but most of the movie is either entirely fictional or exaggerated) is very reminiscent of Scarface, Nobodies trying to become somebodies, and eventually losing it all.
The first hour is pretty horrible, containing muscleheads and boobs and every other manly thing there is. However, after the halfway mark, the satirical aspect of the film kicks in, and the movie starts to get good.
The acting is pretty good, especially from Dwayne Johnson, who I did not expect to do a good job at all. Also, the movie is very funny, but in a dark way. The only downside (beside the first half) is the amount of violence.
Now, like Scarface, Pain & Gain contains a ton of violence, but alot of times it serves no purpose. Torture, fist fights, dismemberment, etc. Overall, Pain & Gain is by far Michael Bay's best movie, although that isn't saying much.
