Review of Padmaavat (2018) by Sul H — 28 Jan 2018
People criticize this movie for having a feeble plot and having an insanely long run time. I agree with the latter. This movie was too long. But it was cinematic brilliance. Bhansali bases this off of a 1000 year old poem, so, yes the plot will be sort of predictable.
Back then it was all about good vs. evil and honor vs. shame. So, that means a "simple" plot deal with it. Padmaavati will set off all your neurons it does that with it's immaculate visual beauty.
Ranveer Singh was fantastically evil and a complex evil man. Deepika was mesmerizing to look at and lived up to the role of the legend she embodied. Her lines were poetic and well thought out. Her character Padmaavati is a new strandard for Hindi heroines to come.
Shahid had some excellent scenes and he so accurately portrayed Rajput pride. The music, my God, I had goosebumps everytime the soundtrack played. It was true it's time and truly touching. Things I didn't like about this movie, it was so long, there were endless disclaimers, and credits in the beginning? Who does that anymore? This has nothing to do with the movie but my experience was completely ruined by the mostly Indian, im assuming, audience there.
They would not stop talking, making comments or turn off their phones. That may have ruined the movie for me. Please be respectful in movie theaters! Overall, I thought it was a movie well done and true to the original poem.
