Review of Paddington (2014) by Dylan H — 18 May 2015
So, I watched this in a theater with a really crappy projector, and the movie looked darker than it was supposed to. Technical difficulties aside, I found it enjoyable, if geared a bit too much towards kids.
..or people who find awkward physical humor where people fall over themselves funny. I don't, but I was able to overlook those moments because the characters won me over. Yes, each one had the SET UP ISSUE THAT WILL BE RESOLVED BY MOVIE'S END, but the actors did a good job being quirky and not annoying.
It's not a deep examination of England's attitude towards immigrants...it's not even really a very shallow one, unless one digs in. I'm torn between wishing Paddington didn't speak perfect English-English, and dreading the stereotypical accent they would have given him.
Instead of an accent Paddington wears his foreignness by being a bear, which few people in the film question. Only the villain really brings it up, using coded, xenophobic language of "their kind moving into the neighborhood with their disruptive, foreign habits.
" She is also the only one who sees Paddington as an animal, not a "person." I don't know what would stop her from coming after Paddington after she gets done with community service.
Or what's to stop Paddington from being deported.
