Review of Paddington (2014) by Valerie P — 22 Oct 2015
It feels strange to review this film so many months after I first viewed it with my family in the cinema. It was, quite possibly, the first cinema film that my four year old did not grow bored of and fidget through. We were all captivated.
Paddington has always been a well-loved tale, and we all grow a bit anxious when our beloved treasures are given a make-over. Sometimes these new adaptations fall unbearably flat (Garfield in CGI upon the silver-screen comes o mind); but just once in awhile, the film studios get it right, and a little bit of magic is created.
The Paddington film is magic. It's the perfect blend of comedy and seriousness. It's fun, it's heartwarming. It has Hugh Bonneville and an adorable CGI bear with the most perfect voice. Sure, Nicole Kidman is a vicious, lunatic taxidermist, but there had to be some form of mischief and mayhem to conjure up suspense.
We loved "Paddington" so much that we gave him a permanent home on our family film shelf. Along with "The Lego Movie", it's one I would have bought even if I didn't have kids.
