Review of Paddington 2 (2017) by Stephen F — 19 Jan 2018
Seeing Paddington 2 only reach number 7 at the US box office is disheartening, to say the least. I didn't expect it to do well, what with the weak publicity it has been getting over here. That is somewhat to be expected as it is a quintessentially British movie on the surface. But at its core, Paddington 2 is a beautiful heartwarming tale of love, acceptance, friendship, family and marmalade sandwiches (like I said, very British).
It's a cliché to say it is fun for all ages, but it is! It doesn't rely on fart jokes or laughing at someone's expense. Its message of acceptance comes across in how it views its audience, it's the thread that holds the movie together. In Paddington's own words "If you are kind and polite, the world will be alright". Paddington 2 is very kind and very polite, but not to an extent to call it naive or repetitive.
The world it creates is balanced between reality and fantasy, without going too far into either one. It truly is a balancing act of family cinema I've not seen since... Well, since Paddington 1!
So please do yourself a favour and go and see this little bear, he will not disappoint. You will laugh and cry, and wonder if you've ever smiled so much after seeing a movie.
