Review of Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018) by Lilly S — 25 Mar 2018
I believe I've watched the original at least 12 times, and I judge airlines' in-flight entertainment based on that movie's availability. So when they announced the sequel I was super hyped. Then when the trailer dropped, my expectations sunk super low. And seeing early reviews further depressed those expectations.
But I gave the sequel a chance. And I was surprised I actually liked it. Yes yes there's no Guillermo at the helms, the one who turns bullshit stories into great films. And the soundtrack was flat. But this worked, and the director did try, and even tried pushing the boundaries.
I remember a period when the first movie was slated, but emerged almost as a cult favourite. This might not be, but it's fun. The Kaiju/mecha genre was never intended to tell great stories. It is purely for entertainment.
Rating: 7/10.
