Review of Pacific Rim (2013) by Daniel C — 01 Apr 2015
Giant machines called Jaeger's battle sea monsters (Kaiju) to save Earth from apocalypse.
Set in the near future, Earth has come under attack from the seas via a dimensional rift. Large alien creatures are decimating our cities in an attempt to take over the planet. An organisation is setup which builds large, powerful robots with two pilots. It is initially successful until the aliens adapt and learn.
Pacific Rim looks at the story of Raleigh, called back to pilot a Jaeger after his brother was killed serving alongside him in a Kaiju attack and to attempt to close the rift for good.
It's hard not to draw parallels to those live action and anime series out of Japan featuring giant robots. One that sprang to mind was Evangelion as the ideas are very similar. The movie follows a rather predictable story but it remains entertaining even with the inclusion of some of the most annoying characters and poorly executed Australian accents you're likely to see and hear, but in saying that, on a recent re-watch of the film it was still enjoyable and quite stunning to see - particularly in 3D.
