Review of Oz the Great and Powerful (2013) by Satyaki M — 09 Oct 2013
Whilst this movie is both visually stunning and dangerously colourful I found if anything, it lacked heart.
Too many cliches mar this film as it persistently draws you in and disappoints by offering only predictable outcomes.
Fairly little character development is seen and we have no time to develop any kind of emotional investment in characters. Oz, is far too easily drawn in by any pretty face he sees, evanora lacks any kind of motive in destroying the land, theodoras torment is quick and seemingly painless, her transformation be ng no struggle at all and Glinda, the good witch looks like barbie, her lines making her sound like a defenseless 50s housewife appearing to have little to no affection even developing for Oz until one of the very last scenes.
This film appears to be made for children as even it's 'dark' scenes are comical, complete with a graveyard and dry ice.
The film itself lacks charm of any kind, it is neither mystical nor mysterious. Everything to see is simply there, right in front of you, offering the audience no intrigue. As a film that was created to bring about a sense of wonder it fails completely.
I feel I have wasted hours of my life sitting through this bilge. The storyline may have some hope if Tim Burton one day decides to recycle it but I honestly hope to never hear of this film again.
